The Glen
A naval air station, then a whole district on one clock
Glenview Naval Air Station closed in 1995. What replaced it is roughly a seventh of the village, built inside fifteen years.
Doors do not fail on a birthday, but they do fail on a distribution, and when thousands were fitted in the same few years that distribution stacks up. We see it already: neighbors on one street calling within months of each other, the same spring sizes, the same opener families, the same worn drive gears.
The plain version: an opener from 1998 has done its job. Its logic board is long obsolete and its photo eyes have been knocked and re-aimed a dozen times. Replacing it is arithmetic, not an upsell.

Glenview has 48,705 residents across 14.04 square miles, and is unusual in having two standard delivery ZIP codes rather than one plus a post-office-box code. 60025 covers around 41,000 people, 60026 around 14,500. Both take mail; either is a real home address.
The village was named in 1895 and incorporated in 1899, but much of the area stayed farmland well into the twentieth century. Developers such as Tom Sullivan gave it its suburban shape after the Second World War. Then The Glen added a second layer with nothing in common with the first.
Glenview is genuinely bimodal. A 1946 garage and a 2004 garage sit two miles apart sharing almost no parts, and the questions we get asked in each half barely overlap.
Worth checking on a Glen-era door

Northwest Glenview, curving cul-de-sacs and mature landscaping close to The Glen Town Center. A mixed-age pocket right beside the newest part of the village.
Heatherfield
Master-planned by Edward R. James, mixing single-family homes, townhomes, rowhomes and condominiums around pocket parks, with its own retail center. Repeated door types across long rows, which makes coordinated replacement much cheaper per door than doing them singly.

Golf Road east, and a village worth knowing
From N Ridge Avenue the direct connector is Golf Road (IL-58), straight east. Willow Road, Lake Avenue and Central Road are the parallel options, and I-294 handles the southern approach. Glenview sits on the eastern boundary of our area, so we run it with Northbrook and book in blocks.
Landmarks: The Glen and The Glen Town Center, Wagner Farm at 18.6 acres, the Kohl Children’s Museum and The Grove, a 123-acre nature preserve. Two Metra stations, Glenview and North Glenview, both on the Milwaukee District North line rather than the UP-NW.
Glenbrook South serves the high school population; Glenview District 34 covers most, not all, of the elementary catchment.

Our whole street at The Glen seems to be replacing openers. Are they all failing at once?
Effectively, yes. The Glen was built out from 1995 over roughly fifteen years, so a very large number of doors and openers went in within a short window and are now hitting the same 20 to 30 year point. Not a defect, not a coincidence. If several neighbors are doing it together, ask us to quote it as one visit.
Glenview and Northbrook are at the edge of your area. Do you still come out?
We do, and we plan for it. Both are roughly twenty minutes east and we run them as a pair, so we ask for a little flexibility on the window rather than quoting a time we would miss. No travel surcharge, and the same workmanship warranty as a job three streets from the workshop.
Which of my two ZIP codes is the residential one?
Both. Glenview is unusual in having two standard delivery ZIPs, 60025 and 60026, and no post-office-box-only code. Whichever your mail uses is correct, and neither changes pricing or scheduling. The neighborhood name helps us more, because it tells us the era of the garage.
Our Swainwood garage is detached and the door has no cables through the springs. Is that dangerous?
It is the one thing we would fix without waiting. An extension spring under tension stores a lot of energy, and without a containment cable through it nothing stops the pieces traveling when it lets go. Cables are cheap, quick and standard practice. We add them to any extension system we work on.
There is a bedroom over our garage and the door wakes the house. What actually helps?
Four things, in order of value: nylon rollers on sealed bearings, a belt-drive or jackshaft opener instead of a chain, isolation between the opener bracket and the framing, and fresh torsion bearings.
